Black Single Parents: What do you Need to do?
Being a single parent is often a thankless and tiresome job, but you do not have to do it all alone. Now that single parenting is more socially acceptable, the Government realized it must do everything within it's power to support those who choose (or are forced) to parent by themselves. There are many programs that can help you and your children lead a better way of life. Black single parents can take advantage of all of these publicly available programs, and may even find resources in their area that are available online to the African American single parents. Below you will find a brief list of the types of programs that are available to help.
Educational Resources
One of the main sources of help for black single parents is the educational resources that are available. There are many scholarship and grant programs which are specifically targeted for single African American parents. These range from programs which will supplement your tuition to those who will pay all of your fees, books, and offer you a monthly stipend while you attend class. The resources that are available will vary from state to state though, and often are based on your income and other relevant circumstances.
Day Care Resources
Day care assistance is another way in which local communities are helping black single parents get the help they need in order to thrive. These programs range from the free government allotted preschool programs, to fully subsidized child care services. These services are offered to low income families in order to allow the parent to return to work. This is one of the most valuable resources available to single parents, as it allows your child to get quality care when you are not able to be with them.
Food and Nutrition Services
Another set of programs that many single parents find extremely helpful are the food and nutrition services that are available in each city. From the Women Infant and Children (or WIC) programs which provides vouchers for basics such as cereal, milk, and formula, to food stamps and other related resources. Black single parents, along with those of other ethnic backgrounds, can help their children get the nutrition that they need in order to be healthy. While not every city or county has the same programs in place, there is always some type of helpful food related resources available in each location.
Ask Around
For other basic needs, black single parents can often find everything they need by simply asking around. If you are struggling to make ends meet and find yourself in need of other basics such as clothing, household supplies, or items for school, then simply ask around at local agencies and community or church related organizations. The old saying ask and you shall receive still holds true today, and although you may not know it, there are many organizations in your local area just waiting to help you meet your family's needs.
The programs listed above are just an example of the ones available in various locations across the United States. There are many organizations dedicated to helping single parents get the help they need. Black single parents should never give up hope of receiving the help they need, all you have to do is seek help and you shall receive.
